Kia Optima: Motor Driven Power Steering / MDPS System
Repair procedures
1. |
MDPS power pack assembly failure can be quickly diagnosed using the vehicle
diagnostic system (KDS).
(1) |
Self-diagnosis: Checking failure and providing DTC code.
|
(2) |
Current data: Checking the system input/output data state.
|
(3) |
Actuation test: Checking the system operation condition.
|
(4) |
Additional function: Controlling other features including system
option setting, calibration adjustment and other function.
When a DTC related to MDPS motor occurs, check the connectors
and wiring. If there is no problem, replace the motor.
|
|
|
1. |
Remove the MDPS assembly.
(Refer to Motor Driven Power Steering - "MDPS Column & Housing")
|
2. |
Disconnect the MDPS System connector (A).
Disconnect the connector in the following order.
|
|
3. |
Remove the MDPS System (A) after loosening the mounting bolts.
Tightening torque :
8.0 - 12.0 N·m (0.8 - 1.2 kgf·m, 5.9 - 8.8 lb-ft)
|
|
• |
Install the component to the specified torque.
|
• |
Note that internal damage may occur if the component drops. In
this case, use it after inspecting.
|
• |
When installing a power pack, install it after checking the coupling
(A).
|
• |
When attaching the power pack to the MDPS, attach the power pack
in accordance with the guide line as follows.
|
|
1. |
Install in the reverse order of removal.
|
2. |
Perform the "EPS Type Recognition" by KDS.
(Refer to MDPS System - "Diagnosis with KDS")
|
3. |
Perform the "SAS Calibration" by KDS.
(Refer to MDPS System - "Diagnosis with KDS")
|
4. |
Check and erase the DTC.
•
|
Check if there is any DTC code found before DTC erase.
|
•
|
Replace the parts by MDPS Power Pack unit.
(Never detach the ECU and motor.)
|
|
|
5. |
Perform the MDPS performance test.
(Refer to Motor Driven Power Steering - "Troubleshooting")
|
[EPS Type Recognition]
1. |
Since MDPS can store various tuning maps with different steering feelings
in the ECU and different steering feelings depending on the application
area and the vehicle engine type, it is necessary to set codes appropriate
for the application area and the vehicle.
If missing the EPS type recognition procedure, a problem may
occur with motor driven power steering performance.
|
EPS type recognition procedure is necessary for;
–
|
DTC indicator illuminate (DTC Code: C1702, Application
Area Fault).
|
–
|
Excessive different steering feeling.
|
|
|
[EPS Type Recognition
procedures]
• |
Check if the battery voltage is in normal using KDS before EPS
type recognition procedure.
|
• |
Be careful not to disconnect any connectors from the vehicle
or KDS while EPS type recognition.
|
• |
Once complete the EPS type recognition procedure, turn off the
engine and wait at least 20 seconds.
And IG ON and check if the system works in normal.
|
|
1. |
Connect the self-diagnosis connector (16 pins) located in the lower of
driver side crash pad to KDS.
|
2. |
Turn the self-diagnosis device after ignition is ON.
|
3. |
Align the steering wheel to straight ahead position.
|
4. |
After Selecting the "vehicle model" and "system", select the "EPS Type
Recognition" on diagnostic tool vehicle selection screen.
|
6. |
Turn off the ignition and wait for 20 seconds or more before starting
the engine. And then make sure that MDPS works properly.
|
[SAS Calibration]
– |
Steering-angle sensor is a built in function in MDPS torque angle sensor
(TAS) to detect the steering angle and steering angle speed of the driver.
Steering angle and steering angle speed are used for damping control
and restoring control in addition to the basic steering force.
|
Steering angle initializing (ASP calibration) is necessary for;
– |
DTC indicator illuminate (DTC Code: C1261, Calibration Fault).
|
– |
MDPS restoring control function OFF.
|
|
[SAS Calibration procedures]
• |
Check if the battery voltage is in normal using KDS before Steering
Angle initializing (ASP calibration) procedure.
|
• |
Be careful not to disconnect any connectors from the vehicle
or KDS while Steering angle initializing procedure.
|
• |
Once complete the Steering Initializing procedure, turn off the
engine and wait at least 10 seconds.
|
|
|
|
|
4. |
After Selecting the "vehicle model" and "system", select the "SAS Calibration"
on diagnostic tool vehicle selection screen.
|
6. |
Turn off the ignition and wait for 20 seconds or more before starting
the engine. And then make sure that MDPS works properly.
