Kia Optima: Engine Control System / Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS)
Description and operation
• |
Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) is a hall sensor, which detects the camshaft
position by using a hall element.
|
• |
It is synchronized with Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) and detects
the piston position of each cylinder which cannot be detected by the CKPS.
|
• |
The two CMPS are installed on engine head cover of bank 1 and 2 (intake,
exhaust) respectively and use a target wheel installed on the camshaft.
|
• |
The Camshaft Position Sensor is a hall-effect type sensor.
|
• |
As the target wheel passes the Hall sensor, the magnetic field changes
in the sensor.
|
• |
The sensor then switches a signal which creates a square wave.

Repair procedures
1. |
The engine control system can be more quickly diagnosed for troubles
by using the vehicle diagnostic system (KDS). (Refer to "DTC guide")
KDS provides the following information.
(1) |
Self diagnosis : Inspects and displays diagnostic trouble code
(DTC)
|
(2) |
Sensor data : Checks the system input/output value status
|
(3) |
Forced operation : Checks the system operating status
|
(4) |
Additional function : Controls system options, zero point adjustment
and other functions
|
|
1. |
Check signal waveform of CMPS using a KDS.
Specification : Refer to "DTC diagnostic guide"
|
|
DON’T remove the camshaft position sensor during engine running or right
after engine stops, or a scald by the flowed out engine oil may occur.
|
1. |
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
|
2. |
Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector (A).
|
3. |
Remove the camshaft position sensor after loosening the mounting bolt
(B).
Tightening torque :
9.8 - 11.8 N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft)

• |
Install the component to the specified torque.
|
• |
Note that internal damage may occur if the component is dropped.
In this case, inspect the component before installation.
|
